Original pressings, in a courtyard.

Candy Records is Jan Mellin’s record shop — the record half of Planet Candy, “Music & Wines” — in the courtyard at Vestergade 5, behind a door under a grapevine. It began in Copenhagen in the late 1980s, when the industry was busy replacing vinyl with the CD: Jan took over a small shop there and started Candy with a single idea, to sell only original pressings. He imported them himself, outside the Danish distribution system, and through the 1990s, when vinyl was hard to find, Candy was where the first pressings turned up.

In Køge the shop sells what is left of that stock, takes records on commission from old customers and local people, and keeps some ordinary records too — and wine: Cupedia Wines, from Dr. Crusius and Castello di Verduno, racked in the window. Outside, on a pink folding chair next to a wine barrel, there is a crate to dig through. The rarities and the stock are listed online, and the shop sells on Discogs as Candyrecord. The photograph is printed here as a crate of records seen end-on, every spine its own strip, with the real crate left exactly as it stood.
