Thyme Planteskole.
The third secret spot: a plant nursery on the edge of town, in the same family name since 1964 — an open yard under polytunnel roofs, glasshouse aisles that go on and on, apples on espaliered trees, heather, grasses and a table of pumpkins in autumn. In the middle of November it turns into Christmas.

The secret
A nursery under glass and plastic.
Thyme Planteskole began as a fruit plantation in the 1940s, vegetables grown between the rows of trees and sold on the square in Køge. Flemming Thyme, trained at one of Denmark’s largest nurseries, started the nursery here in 1964; in the 1970s and 80s it grew trees and shrubs on 36 tønder land, much of which is now Køge Golf Klub. Today it is a retail nursery on seven tønder land — more than 25 people, a large shop, a 1,000 m² covered yard and two big glasshouses — and the man who runs it today started here at sixteen, sweeping the yard.
Come for the walk as much as for the plants: through the shop into the yard under the arched roofs, past the heather and the pumpkins, into the long glasshouse aisles, out to the trees and the hedging plants. In autumn the tables are laid with white pumpkins, apples, candles and wreaths of dried hydrangea. The photographs are our own, from a sunny October morning; the yard is printed here as a seed tray seen from above, one cell to a plug, the autumn table left exactly as it was.
