Il Gallo, in Danish.

Il Gallo is Italian for the rooster — a nod to the hens of Køge — and Louise and Joseph have run it at Brogade 21 since the 1990s: Joseph in the kitchen, Louise the house sommelier, a small wine cellar under the dining room. Now the rooster has a Danish twin across the street. Hanen is an enoteca with a pizza oven: crisp Italian pizza, gelato made by hand, and a wine list imported directly from Italy, by the glass or to take home — the pizza that used to come out of Il Gallo’s kitchen, and the ice cream of Freddo, the couple’s gelateria, under one roof.

It opened in October 2026, and the town noticed: a local post called it new life for the town centre and thanked the two for investing in Køge. In the photograph the house is still getting used to the attention — the rooster on the window, a chalkboard on the pavement, café chairs out under a blue sky. It is printed here as its own half-timbering, the window, the door and the chairs left exactly as they were.
